Dear parents and families of incoming students,

It’s a brand new week and time for us to share some news, tips, and information related to your student’s transition to college.

New Deac Welcome Week app is live!

To access the 2023 New Deac Welcome Week (aka Orientation) schedule:

  • DOWNLOAD THE APP: Go to your APP or Google Play store and search “WFU Orientation Programs” to access the New Deac Welcome Week 2023 guide or simply scan the QR code below
  • On a laptop/desktop computer or unsupported mobile device, visit the following link to access the content in your web browser.
  • In the top left menu, choose Schedule by Tracks > Parents and Families to see your schedule (students will choose the First Year or Transfer track as applicable).

We encourage you to download the app as the web browser version does not support all of the features available in the mobile app version. You will find the most up-to-date information, including schedules, maps, and much more.

Non-compliance with immunization documentation

We want to give an update on processes happening to any students who have not uploaded their required health information and immunization documentation, which was due July 1:

  • If your student did not upload their required health information and immunization forms in the Student Health Portal by the deadline of July 1, they will soon begin receiving emails until their documentation is uploaded and accepted. Families may also receive a notice that their student is out of compliance with University policy.
  • The emails to students will tell them that a hold will be placed on their student account, which means they will not be able to participate in Pre-Orientation or move into the residence halls if their documentation is not uploaded in the Student Health Portal.
  • Please ask your students to check their Secure Messages within the Student Health Portal to ensure they are compliant and to avoid any interruption to their fall semester.

Online New Deac 101 classes online for your students to complete

Last week, your student received communication via their WFU email address about their required online Orientation course, New Deac 101.

ND101 is mandatory for both our new and transfer students.

Your students are being asked to complete the New Deac 101 course via asynchronous sessions available through Canvas and taken in two parts:

  • Module I: “New to the Forest” (due Monday, August 21st)
  • Module II: “Fall in the Forest” Extended Orientation (due Friday, September 29th)

A few options to consider

Zipcar or Wake Line shuttles vs your student bringing a car

Think your student needs a car at Wake? Think again! There are plenty of ways to get around campus and Winston-Salem without a personal vehicle:

  • A shuttle hub in the heart of campus will service all Wake Line routes with free transportation services to Wake Downtown, shopping, entertainment, and airports (during designated breaks).
  • Wake Forest’s Reynolda Campus is extremely walkable and bikeable. All academic buildings and dining locations can be reached on foot from the first-year residence halls in about 10 minutes or less.
  • Need to get somewhere not served by a shuttle? Grab a Zipcar–conveniently located near the first-year residence halls–for a low rate that includes gas and insurance.
  • Note that the designated parking lot for first-year students is a 15-minute walk from the South Campus residence halls.
  • Click here for details on alternative transportation options at Wake Forest.
  • If you are still interested in having a personal vehicle on campus, parking registration information can be found on the Transportation & Parking website.

Reminder of fraternity and sorority webinar July 25

Is your student interested in learning more about Fraternity and Sorority Life? There will be two webinars for students and families where Fraternity and Sorority Life staff will discuss general information about our community, common values all of our organizations share, differences in our councils, and requirements to join a chapter.

Dates and times are: Tuesday, July 25th at 12 p.m. EST (Register Here) and Thursday, Aug. 3rd at 6 p.m. EST (Register Here).

Disabilities documentation due to CLASS August 1

If your student has a documented disability and used accommodations in high school, documentation for the student accommodations process is due August 1. Some students want to try college without those accommodations and later discover they wished they’d had the accommodation from the beginning. Please be working on this process if it applies to your student.

Tuition is due August 1; see payment methods

Fall tuition statements were issued the first week of July; this means the bill is visible in DEAC. Please note that tuition must be paid by August 1; see payment methods.

Important: if your Deac has not made you an Authorized Payer yet, please encourage them to do so (it’s to their benefit to have someone else see when bills are due! This is also what allows us to speak with you about your student’s billing details).

Parting thoughts

Please continue reviewing the Parents and Families section of the New Students website, and encouraging your student to be attentive to their action items on the First-Year student or Transfer Student checklist. As always, we will archive this message – and all our summer weekly messages – here.

With best wishes,

Betsy Chapman, Ph.D. (’92, MA ’94)
