If you crave a complete change of scenery from the Quad’s Georgian architecture, grab your scientific calculator and safety goggles and hop on a shuttle bound for Wake Downtown — an extension of our campus in Wake Forest Innovation Quarter. To offer hands-on engineering and science courses to our undergraduates, the Forest has grown beyond the bucolic green expanses of Reynolda Campus into the wild urban jungle of downtown Winston-Salem.
Students enrolled in the engineering and biomedical sciences programs at Wake Downtown are immersed in an active, roll-up-your-sleeves learning environment. Experiential learning normally reserved for graduate-level study is the cornerstone of these undergraduate opportunities.
While most areas of study fall under engineering, biochemistry & molecular biology, and medicinal chemistry & drug discovery, courses in the humanities will also be offered in this interdisciplinary new space. To provide our Wake Downtown students with every advantage, we set up shop right next to the Wake Forest School of Medicine facilities — giving our undergraduates proximity to those labs and research spaces and encouraging teaching and collaboration among faculty.

Learn what makes life possible with this interdisciplinary degree offering from the departments of chemistry and biology. Understanding growth, development, reproduction and genetics begins with the study of life at the molecular and cellular levels. With a highly engaged, hands-on approach to learning, faculty and students will use analytical and quantitative methods in the chemical and physical sciences to learn practical skills for addressing today’s complex biological, biochemical and biomedical challenges. Students will partner with faculty mentors for at least two semesters and/or summers of research, culminating in a senior research project.
Discovery is for people who love a challenge as much as they love learning. Leveraging the strength of the chemistry department’s research program, Wake Forest now offers a concentration in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. With the goal of identifying new therapeutic agents, faculty will engage students in an in-depth study of the connections between chemical structure and biological function. This concentration is especially attractive to students in health-related fields, biomedical sciences and pharmacology. This offering provides a new avenue to earning an American Chemical Society certified B.S. degree.
This Bachelor of Science program is innovative and hands-on, just like a good engineer. It offers a comprehensive and fully immersed technical education with a firm academic grounding in the liberal arts. With Wake Forest’s unsurpassed student-faculty engagement and real-world learning opportunities, the curriculum extends beyond that of a typical undergraduate engineering program. This Bachelor of Science major offers an optional concentration in biomedical engineering.
The stuff of science fiction is growing in our labs. Faculty at the Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine — the scientists who collaborated on this new 15-hour minor — are doing groundbreaking research in biomaterials science and engineering. Through this minor, housed in the department of engineering, students will be introduced to the ways researchers study and mimic biological materials like bone, soft tissue and muscle. This minor will particularly complement majors in biology, physics, chemistry and engineering.
