Residence Hall Assignments

Before completing the Housing and Dining Application, please review the following information. We wait until we receive forms from a majority of students in order to match students based upon designated preferences. Although we try to match all preferences, this is not always possible. Room and roommate assignments are made in mid-July.

Complete your Housing and Dining Application — Available June 1

You are encouraged to discuss all of this information with your parents, but you should complete the agreement since you know yourself better than anyone else.

You may have special needs that should be taken into consideration when assigning your room. Any medical or physical considerations that require special accommodation should be made in writing to the Student Health Service from your doctor. All inquiries will be reviewed by the appropriate University officials to determine the necessity for such requests.

You will be notified of your room and roommate in late July. Room and roommate assignments are made without regard to race, religion, sexual orientation or national origin. We do not assign siblings or friends as roommates.

Many students use online social networks such as Facebook to learn more about their roommate. Occasionally, this can create anxiety between roommates before they have even met. Please remember that just because someone may be different from you, that does not necessarily mean that you will have an unsuccessful roommate relationship. In fact, these very differences often cultivate engaged dialogue and foster valuable communication between roommates.

Once initial room assignments are made, you may not switch rooms until the first room change period in September. Residents who wish to switch rooms are encouraged to visit with their Resident Adviser (RA) who will assist them.

First-year students may be assigned to a single or a double room. If you are assigned to a single room and would like information about other students assigned to singles in your hall, please contact us. Single rooms are charged at the single rate; however, you will be eligible to request a room change in September if space becomes available and you do not wish to retain your single room.

Property Insurance

Neither Wake Forest University nor the Office of Residence Life and Housing can or will assume responsibility for theft, loss or damage to your personal property. Most thefts occur when residents leave their room door unlocked and their property unattended. Keeping your room door locked at all times is your best defense against theft.

The University also does not cover property loss for damage due to unforeseeable facility incidents which may occur. Before coming to campus, determine what it would cost to replace such belongings as your phone, iPod, television, camera and ThinkPad (issued by Wake Forest).

After you have assessed the value of your items, check the coverage that you may already have with your family’s property insurance policies. Many policies will cover the loss or theft of your belongings even if the policy is in your parents’ names and you are living on campus. If not, we suggest you purchase renter’s insurance to cover any possible losses.

If interested in information on renter’s insurance, please contact the Office of Residence Life and Housing at 336-758-5185.

Housing Guarantee

Wake Forest has a three-year residency requirement and is one of the few universities in the country that guarantees housing for eight semesters (for students in good standing). Students are required to live in campus housing their first three years unless they live with their parent or guardian in the Winston-Salem area.

If you voluntarily move off campus after three years, you will lose your residency (on-campus) status and be re-classified as a “non-resident student” and are no longer guaranteed on-campus housing. If you wish to return to campus, you will be placed on the Non-Resident Student Wait List to be considered for campus housing, if available.
